The Government of Ghana would from 18^th September,2009 commence the issuance of machine-readable biometric Diplomatic and Service Passports. This is in conformity with regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation(ICAO) and also the desire to improve the security of passports.

The issuance of the new Biometric Ordinary Passports will commence in due course and the general public will be informed accordingly.

During the transition period, the Ghana Passport Office would continue to issue both the current passports as well as the new Biometric Passports until 31^st April, 2010 after which only the Biometric Passports would be issued.

It must be noted that the current passport will remain in circulation until November 2015 when it would cease to be valid.
